Scout Seeks to Preserve Local Cemetery
Details
MANOR, TX -- Deep in the heart of the Shadow Glen Golf Club in East Travis County, a small stand of trees looks a little out of place.Upon a closer look, the old Rector Cemetery comes into view.
The cemetery is covered in growth, and holds nearly two dozen graves. The oldest grave dates back to the mid 1800's and belongs to the first wife of James B. Manor, the town’s founder. The plots were nearly forgotten until the land was cleared for the course.
Though a fence surrounding the small cemetery now protects it, 16-year-old Zach Givens would like to do more to preserve it. The Pflugerville sophomore and Boy Scout started a campaign to raise $400. He is also looking for volunteers who can help clear debris.
“Some of the headstones have fallen over, and they’re starting to collect mold and get aged,” said Givens. “What I am trying to do is bring out the original beauty of the cemetery.”After that, Givens said he will appeal to the state for a marker that would designate it as a historical site. “Hopefully I can make this a nicer looking cemetery and bring it back,” said Givens. “It will help with the history.”
Givens set up an account at the BBVA Compass Bank to help raise funds.
