Wildfire Update - One Scout's Reaction
Earlier today, we received a phone call here at the Fickett Center from a 13-year-old Boy Scout. Out of respect for his family's privacy, we won't use his name. But you need to hear his story.
The Scout and his family live in Bastrop and lost their home in the fire there. He wanted to let us know that his family was safe, and were staying at his Grandmother's home. He asked about some things that his mother, father and sister could use, and we directed them to some help close to them.
When asked if there was anything the Scout himself needed, he paused... then replied, "Just my Boy Scout Handbook.... my uniform... and my merit badge sash". Nothing else? "Nope".
These are the kind of young men you are developing through your work in Scouting. Steadfast. Selfless. Resolute. Ready to take life's punches, get back up and start swinging.
God bless each and every one of you and what you do for every child in our program. Now, more than ever, we couldn't do it without you.
Oh, and you can bet that young man is going to get a new Handbook, uniform and sash... complete with every merit badge he's earned.

Late this afternoon (Friday September 9), we filled an 18 foot truck with relief supplies that is now on its way to help families hit hard by this week's wildfires. "We" is in bold because the donations were collected from several District Roundtables and individual Scouting families across our council. Your actions this week show that truly do believe and live the values of Scouting every day.
