iFLY NOVA Classes

Our council’s STEM NOVA committee has teamed up with iFLY to offer a fun way for your Scouts to work on the BSA’s “Up and Away” Nova Award. There is a version for members of Cub Scout Packs, STEM Scouts Labs, and Scouts BSA Troops:

Cub Scouts and elementary school STEM Scouts-level class

Youth will learn about terminal velocity, fluid dynamics and airfoils via experiments and games. After that, youth will suit up, take flight lessons and then practice their “flying” skills. The whole class may last up to three hours, depending on the number of flights for which each youth signs up.

Classes are limited to a maximum of 20 participants. Cub Scouts will need to bring their latest Pinewood Derby car, Space Derby rocket, or Raingutter Regatta boat to the class.

Class schedule:

  • 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm – Arrive, check in, and ball demonstration
  • 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm – NOVA Presentation by our council’s STEM/NOVA Committee
  • 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm – Flight class and gear up
  • 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Flights

Cub Scouts have the opportunity to complete Requirements 1, 3, 4, and 5. If youth bring a Pinewood Derby car, space Derby rocket, or Raingutter Regatta boat to the class, they may be able to complete Requirement 2 (and thus the whole Nova Award). Visit this page to see all of the requirements for the Up and Away Nova Award.

Who can attend this class?

  • Cub Scouts and non-Scout siblings
  • Elementary school-aged STEM Scouts
  • Adults (adults must email [email protected] separately for arrangements)

Scouts BSA and middle school STEM Scouts-level class

The whole class may last up to three hours, depending on the number of flights for which each youth signs up.

Classes are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Class schedule:

  • 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm – Arrive, check in, and ball demonstration

Scouts have the opportunity to complete Requirements 3, 4, and 5.
