April 1, 2023

Board a bus at the Fickett Center and tour a number geological hot spots in the greater Austin area. Hosted by members of the Austin Geological Society, you will learn from the best industry experts Austin has to offer.

Stops could include:

  • Mount Bonnell for orientation, geomorphology (incised meanders), geological history events
  • Northwest Hills School grounds for structure, sedimentary rocks, rock sampling/collecting, textures
  • Pease Park for geological formations, contacts, fossil and rock collection
  • Barton Springs Pool for faults, springs, groundwater, aquifers
  • Stacy Park for Austin Chalk outcrops, Blunn Creek alluvium
  • Pilot Knob vicinity for igneous rocks, geological history
  • Colorado River gravel pits for sedimentary particles, stream transport effects, concept of provenance, sampling different rock types

There are also several dramatic geological outcrops that can be seen along area highways.

Bring a water bottle and pack a lunch for the trip!

Space is limited to 40 Scouts BSA youth. The fee for Scouts BSA youth is $15.

We are also looking for 8 adult leaders to join the excursion, free of charge, to help provide “adequate supervision” and learn a little about Austin’s geology.
