Climbing Instructor Training
Climbing and Rappelling are among the few Scouting activities which challenge and captivate the imagination of all ages. Austin is blessed with proximity to both natural and manufactured climbing and rappelling resources. DOK’s Tower at our Lost Pines Scout Reservation in Bastrop is one of the finest climbing facilities in the country and the tallest in the state. Our council is lucky to have Reimer’s Ranch, Enchanted Rock, and various city parks where climbing is available. In addition, we offer a C.O.P.E. (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) ropes course at our Griffith League Scout Ranch near Bastrop. The Capitol Area Council (CAC) Climbing Committee is offering the instructor course to satisfy the requirements of the BSA National Standards, Climb On Safely, and the Guide to Safe Scouting, while preparing individuals to supervise and facilitate these activities. Note: Our council’s Climbing Committee does not provide units with instructors. Units wanting to use DOK’s Tower at Lost Pines must have at least one trained Climbing Instructor.
Training is delivered through three separate classes: Climbing Level II Tower, Climbing Level II Natural Area, and Level II C.O.P.E. (there is no Level I for any of these courses). These courses involve an evening classroom session, then a full weekend outdoor session (the Natural Area course includes a second full weekend outdoor session). Courses normally take place between late September and mid-November for the fall, and mid-March to early April for the spring.
Classroom training sessions for all courses take place at the Frank Fickett Scout Training and Service Center, 12500 North IH 35, Austin, TX 78753. The Level II Tower course outdoor session takes place at Lost Pines Scout Reservation, 785 FM 1441, Bastrop, TX 78602. The Level II Natural Area outdoor sessions take place at Bull Creek District Park and Greenbelt, 6701 Lakewood Drive, Austin, TX 78731 and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, 16710 Ranch Road 965, Fredericksburg, TX 78624. The Level II C.O.P.E. course outdoor session takes place at Griffith League Scout Ranch, 424 Oak Hill Cemetery Road, Bastrop, TX 78602.
